This is going to be weirder than last time

Some designs start as a clear idea. Others begin as a feeling I can’t quite describe yet. A half-remembered concept, a visual rhythm tapping at the back of my mind, a problem that only reveals itself once I’m already deep into it. This is where I would like to document that buffer. This is a working record of how I approach design. I would like to think these are the decisions that shape a piece, and the small moments where something clicks (or breaks) and becomes better for it.This isn’t a polished portfolio or a step-by-step tutorial series. Some things here may feel unfinished, and that’s intentional. Design rarely arrives fully formed, or fully complete.

Unsplash and The Midnight Ritual

The idea of The Midnight Ritual actually came from a close friend, colleague, and design parter. It's a continuation of The Midnight Series based on previous' years work, Midnight Resolutions.

This completed teaser is an amalgamation of several free and open source images from Unsplash. Each piece has been remixed, adjusted, blended, and compiled to achieve the midnight ritual look and feel.each image is linked to its source

Many of these elements had to be grouped before applying the "lighten" appearance. Using the lighten method allows me more control over which parts of an image can be brought to the top visually.Using additional fill layers, such as dark to light gradients, is an easy way to scrub out parts of an image without using Photoshop or other image editing tool, when combined with the lighten appearance.

The blurred corners effect was actually something I didn't think would work. I had a rough idea in my head about achieving this effect using a combination of transparency masking, textures, and layer blurring.I couldn't use a radial transparency mask because the effect was way too strong along the edges. Instead, once a corner was completed, I duplicated and reflected that group for each corner. Everything was regrouped and locked to be on top of almost every element.

The rest was a combination of previously acquired fonts, and some clever layer masking. There's only one element that is from Shutterstock, and it's the pentagram design at the bottom of the poster. The purpose of this compiling is to demonstrate a desired look without using generative AI. As Gen AI bleeds into every crack and surface of the design industry, using creatively sourced and human-derived work is a way to show, in our own way, authenticity and originality.
